Regulation - A rule or direction maintained by an authority.  IPSO - The Independent Press Standards Organisation is the independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. They  hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press. Both online and print news need to be regulated. This is due to past scandals such as phone hacking within the news industry and regulations need to be in place in order to prevent things like this happening again. Algorithms are something used in moderating content. Algorithms are computer programs that scan for certain things, such as certain words or phrases. The issue with these is that they are easily avoidable. For example spelling a word a different way or adding spaces  in-between. Since algorithms are unreliable for regulation in newspapers and magazines, organisations like IPSO u...

How far might audiences respond differently to representations? (Life on Mars)

In life on mars, many characters are represented differently. Gender is represented in a number of ways through certain characters. Each character typically confides to their times representational norms. For example, Sam's girlfriend in the modern day goes by her own initiative and goes after a hunch showing the times more confidence in women not doing what men tell them however Sam had told her that she's off the case, showing a degree of male control. The audience would typically see this to be a strong woman as a dominant reader would see what the show is trying to convey, on the other hand an oppositional reader may think that she is falling into stereotypes of women through being 'dumb' and following her hunch rather than viewing her as a strong independent woman. Oppositely in the past sequences, Liz, is only medical and help out with admin work and is not allowed on any cases, she is also very oppressed and called names by the stereotypical men of the time. Liz ...

Nordic Noir

Nordic Noir also known as Scandinavian Noir is a genre of crime fiction, typically written from the perspective of the police. It is set in Scandinavia or Nordic countries.  Plain language avoiding  metaphor  and set in bleak landscapes results in a dark and morally complex  mood , depicting a tension between the apparently still and bland social surface and the murder, misogyny, rape, and racism it depicts as lying underneath. It contrasts with the  whodunit  style such as the  English country house  murder mystery.

Life on Mars

The text is a hybrid genre, Crime and Sci-fi. It follows the key conventions of both a modern day crime drama and a 1970 crime drama. With the modern day it shows typical conventions such as large offices with computers all over the place, a main detective who is our main character, also within the present day our damsel in distress is revealed to be his girlfriend and partner. Moving on to the 1970 era we have dark rooms with paperwork all over the place and only men within the detective section, most are smoking and in a scene the head detective hits our main character. Also within the 1970 section it establishes a buddy partner narrative which is a key convention of crime cop dramas and even films. All of this shows how different detective work is from the 1970 to modern day like women and overall rules and corruption within the stations. This episode is a restricted narrative because we as the audience know just as much as the main character does and while he tries to figure t...

Luther Codes and Conventions

It is a crime drama but has aspects of other genres and sub-genres such as thriller, low-key lighting, intense music and drama cross cutting. Horror, graphic murder scenes and jump-scares. Psychological, Luthers analysis of why Alice committed the crime. It is also the whodunit subgenera of a crime drama which   features a complex, plot-driven story in which the reader is provided with clues from which the identity of the perpetrator of the crime may be deduced before the solution is revealed at the end of the book. It is located in the city therefore meaning more crime and more opportunity for crime, typical setting are police stations, interrogation rooms and industrial areas which is typically the 'darker' side of the city.  Locations tie in with the crime drama genre e.g. deserted warehouse to  create a feeling of isolation and threat, typical UK street to suggest anyone  could fall victim to the crimes committed. Beyoncé Music Videos

Single Ladies: Beyoncé and two other dancers, dancing to the song. It is focused on the artist's performance rather than a narrative and focuses on her sexual attraction through Mulvey's male gaze. It portrays women as sexual objects due to them being in tight, revealing clothing. It is in black and white. Crazy in Love: Similar to single ladies it mostly shows of the artists performance and still has the male gaze but less. However it is more complex, there could be a very subtle narrative.
