Black Panther

1) It is an action, superhero, sci fi film. It had a big budget due to its major studio (Disney/marvel), High production value a number of big stars. However the main stars were not main Hollywood actors and were less know, it has a mostly passive audience however a number of active audiences and more of an open ending with social themes/messages. It had some serious content but mostly less serious due to the facts it's a superhero movie. It was in the top 20 for most financially successful films ever and its highly pushed distribution helped.

2) It was in phase 3 of the infinity saga and the 18th film in the MCU.

3) It was quite a different film to the others previous and after. The main factor is that it was a mainly black cast. Also within the MCU it explored a new place in the world and answered many questions and theories. The character T'Challa appeared before the solo movie in Captain America: Civil War which had not happened yet. It also was the best critically received before Infinity War and Endgame and brang in a larger audience than ever before in marvel films.

4) The movie itself was a well written and engaging film, with a mix of loss, excitement and confusion, with a big plot twist towards the end. The existing marvel fanbase and the addition of new audiences made it massive. During its release there was many BLM movements going on and for Black Panther being a majorly black cast which are very far and few between, also the Oscar so white where people were angry that Oscars were rewarded to mainly white people and the release of Black Panther and Chadwick Boseman winning an Oscar was a a step in the right direction. However you could argue that the Oscars used the opportunity of a widely successful primarily black film to award a black actor an Oscar to try and show people that they're not picking more whites on purpose.
