Regulation - A rule or direction maintained by an authority.

IPSO -The Independent Press Standards Organisation is the independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. They hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press.

Both online and print news need to be regulated. This is due to past scandals such as phone hacking within the news industry and regulations need to be in place in order to prevent things like this happening again.

Algorithms are something used in moderating content. Algorithms are computer programs that scan for certain things, such as certain words or phrases. The issue with these is that they are easily avoidable. For example spelling a word a different way or adding spaces in-between.

Since algorithms are unreliable for regulation in newspapers and magazines, organisations like IPSO use moderators to regulate newspapers. These are people who read through final publications to ensure they meet regulatory standards. This avoids algorithms mistakes and loopholes, however it does leave human error and or bias.

If you want to make a complaint about accuracy or offensive content, you can either go to the newspaper you're reading or go directly to IPSO.
