The woman singing gets more beat up throughout the video

you see a woman at the start being portrayed in a low angle shot showing that she's powerful

Lyrics and language - Diaect literal/ symbolic metaphor

Mulvey's male gaze

Indie (independant) - Alternative + pop, VHS suggests its indie as its 'not in popularity/mainstream' like indie.

Post-modernism:

Intertextuality - Horror films, Wes Anderson (film director) A-symmetrical centre framed shots gives sense of forced perspective, which is seen in riptide references like binoculars in a high place, typical shots for Anderson is shots from above which is also seen in the suitcase scene. David Lynch - Blue Velvet reference to girl who progressively get more beat up in riptide to girl in Blue Velvet who gets beat up a lot. Another intertextuality is the fake film Velocite which makes reference to Indianapolis 500 which is a 500 mile race. Parody + Pastiche - Stage girl parody and pastiche on Blue Velvet, and Western films for the cowboy scene.

Reflexivity - Where a text becomes aware of itself like breaking the fourth wall. (eg rick and forty at end of each episode or deadpool), like in riptide with the book 'how to photograph women' and towards the end where the camera crew are shown making the video.

Indie artists don't typically feature in their music videos like in mainstream pop music where it's all about fame and the artists image.

Riptide by Vance Joy is and Indie pop song. Indie originally means independant however now it's moved from that meaning and indie songs now are more alternative and less mainstream, there are a few references to this within the video such as where it shows the VHS which isn't in 'popularity/mainstream' as its a vintage thing like indie.

The video at first look is very literal to the lyrics like when there's a cowboy chasing himself, a women becoming unstuck. However there is a few less direct clips such as 'all my friends are turning green' which you could first interpret for jealousy but it shows money as if to say his friends are obsessed with money or his only friend is money. However when looking deeper into the video you see that there is more than what's shown on the surface. A theme of Riptide is abusing women and there are many references to this like the stage girl who progressively get more beat up and more scared, shown through close up shots of her face, as the video progresses which links to the film Blue Velvet directed by David Lynch as in Blue Velvet a singer get abused by a man just like in the Riptide video. Another reference to abusing women could be the woman tied up to a tree or a woman being dragged under a bed. The video also has another theme of escape, shown through many scenes of women running and escaping like when the woman escapes from being tied up.

The video uses post-modernism a lot like intertextuality. It has a very similar style to the director Wes Anderson, A-symmetrical centre framed shots which give a sense of forced perspective and shots from above things which is seen in the suitcase scene. One main reference to Anderson is the scene where the woman is on the balcony looking down with binoculars which is in a film called Moonrise Kingdom by Anderson where a woman is on a lighthouse with binoculars as well.
